SUMMARY
Under basic supervision, provides experienced assistance in the preparation of food at large MPS food preparation kitchens, and at satellite kitchens; prepares and serves food, cleans food service facilities and dining areas, operates a cash register/service terminal, orders and stores food, and maintains inventory and production records.

Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:
Assists the kitchen staff with food preparation and meal services; performs work in compliance with MPS policies, and quality and safety standards; duties may vary according to job assignment.
Acts as the lead worker for Nutrition Services Assistants; assists with training and work assignments; prepares dining areas for meal service and sets up food service lines.
Assists with ordering, record-keeping, and summary reporting; calculates food inventory, and enters data in computer systems on inventory, deliveries, production, usage, and customers served.
Prepares meals, snacks, specialty foods, and salad bar items, and packages bulk foods for delivery; prepares and serves meals and snacks; verifies proper temperature to meet safety requirements; may operate a cash register/service terminal.
Estimates food preparation amounts, and assists in ordering the quantity of food needed; receives, stores, and organizes food and supplies.
Receives materials and supplies; inspects deliveries for accuracy, and appropriate quantity and quality; assures food arriving from all sources is received at proper temperature and maintained at proper temperature to meet food safety requirements.
Cleans work areas and maintains orderly, safe, and sanitary conditions in food service facilities and dining areas; cleans tables, chairs, floors, and surfaces; cleans dishes, utensils, tools, and equipment; cleans dining areas and food preparation areas to meet mandated health standards.
Assists with supervising students in the lunchroom and adjacent areas, and enforces MPS policies and behavior standards.
Supports the relationship between the Minot Public School District and the general public by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with clients, visitors, and District staff; maintains absolute confidentiality of work-related issues, client records, and District information; follows compliance rules governing child abuse; performs related duties as required or assigned.
 
Education, Training, and Experience Guidelines
High School diploma or GED equivalent; AND two years experience in large-scale food preparation, MPS, or other public schools experience is preferred; OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

Knowledge of:
MPS policies and procedures.
Principles of inventory control and storage standards for institutional food.
Safety and sanitation practices for food preparation and distribution, and for maintaining and cleaning food distribution and storage areas.
Personal computers utilizing standard and specialized software applications.
Personal sanitation and hygiene regulations.

Skill in:
Food preparation and presentation techniques and practices.
Coordinating the cleaning of food preparation and dining areas.
Safely using kitchen tools and equipment, and specialized safety testing tools.
Performing general math calculations, and inventory and records management tasks.
Following verbal and written instructions and procedures, and following safety standards.
Establishing and maintaining effective working relations with co-workers.
Communicating effectively verbally and in writing.

LICENSE AND CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
A valid North Dakota State Driver’s License may be required. Training and certification in food safety and sanitation through the North Dakota Department of Public Instruction is required.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT
Work is performed in various MPS food preparation and distribution facilities.

This position is subject to the veteran's preference.
