SUMMARY: The Mechanic position with West Fargo Public Schools is responsible for the service, repair, and safe operation of district transportation and maintenance vehicles. The Mechanic is responsible for ensuring the fleet meets state inspections and all safety standards.
The position's start date is intended for late March or April.

Responsibility:
Conducts maintenance checks and handles routine maintenance of vehicles by inspecting fluid levels, hoses, brakes, exhaust, transmission, and electrical systems.
Cleans the shop area and bus parking area as needed.
Completes documentation of repairs and services for each vehicle.
Maintains and cleans shop tools and resources.
Handles major and minor repairs of vehicles.
Transports learners to and from school or special events when additional drivers are needed.

The employee must work with the public and various WFPS staff while simultaneously managing several competing demands.
The employee will work in an environment that has a quiet to loud noise level.
The employee will likely come into contact with standard automotive fluids.
The employee may come in contact with bloodborne pathogens or other bodily fluids on rare occasions.
Education and/or Experience:
A High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED) is required.
A Diesel Technician Degree or equivalent professional work experience is required.
Must possess a valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).
Must pass a Department of Transportation (DOT) physical exam and standard drug/alcohol testing prior to employment.
Random drug/alcohol testing of transportation employees is performed periodically.
Previous experience as a mechanic is preferred.
Must obtain and maintain all applicable DOT licenses and medical certificates required to operate all buses and maintenance vehicles in the fleet.
Language Skills:
Ability to read, write, and comprehend simple instructions and short correspondences in the English language.
Ability to communicate effectively verbally, expressively, and reactively.

Exercise confidentiality, discretion, and good judgment.
Adhere to the assigned work schedule by maintaining regular and punctual attendance.
Passing of random, periodic drug/alcohol testing of transportation employees.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Supervises assistant mechanics.
Salary: Position follows the 2024-2025 Classified Salary Schedule at B235. Starting salary begins at $23.30-$25.55/hour, based on experience: https://www.west-fargo.k12.nd.us/departments/human-resources/salary
Salary Range:
