Job Description:

This position is for a substitute Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant.

This is a temporary position beginning approximately the end of August 2025 and will end approximately the end of November 2025.

Hours per week:
approximately 35-40 hours per week

SUMMARY
Under general supervision, provides education-related occupational therapy services to students suffering from a variety of cognitive, emotional, and/or physical disabilities in accordance with a student’s individualized education plan (IEP) and under the direction of the Occupational Therapist.

Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

- Adapts school and classroom environments, tools, and materials to improve student skills and facilitate student access to curricular and instructional activities.

- Assists the Occupational Therapist with assessing students to determine deficits and develop recommendations.

- Implements therapeutic activities; instructs teachers, parents, and other involved persons to provide appropriate care and assistance for the implementation of IEPs.

- Provides direct occupational therapy to students according to IEP goals and in compliance with established practices and procedures; may be required to work at multiple sites.

- Presents student performance data, clinical feedback, and other information to facilitate communication, gain additional feedback, and ensure adherence to established internal controls.

- Trains, consults, and instructs teachers on the use of adaptive devices and equipment to ensure devices are used safely and optimal benefits are achieved.

- Maintains files and records in compliance with State, Federal, and administrative regulations; prepares various written materials to include activity logs, reports, and notes.

- Researches resources and methods to determine the appropriate approach for identifying and addressing students’ functional goals.

- Maintains treatment equipment and supplies to ensure clean and proper working condition; prepares materials for therapy sessions.

- Attends meetings and workshops as required.

- Supports the relationship between the Minot Public School District and the general public by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with clients, visitors, and District staff; maintains absolute confidentiality of work-related issues, client records, and District information; follows compliance rules governing child abuse; performs related duties as required or assigned.
 

Education, Training and Experience Guidelines
Associate’s Degree in Occupational Therapy or related field; AND one (1) year of related experience in a public school or related setting; OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Must pass a thorough background investigation.

Knowledge of:
- Department policies and procedures.

- Applicable Federal, State, and local ordinances, statutes, rules, and codes.

- Record keeping and file maintenance principles and procedures.

- Current trends in occupational therapy, instruction, and assessment.

- Special education laws and regulations.

Skill in:
- Operating a personal computer, including standard software and some specialized accounting software.

- Following verbal and written instructions and procedures.

- Establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships.

- Communicating effectively verbally and in writing.

- Preparing and maintaining accurate records.

- Maintaining confidentiality of student records and personal information.

- Assisting children and special needs students.

- Assessing educational needs.

LICENSE AND CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
Must be certified as an Occupational Therapist Assistant; a valid North Dakota State Driver’s License may be required.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT
Work is performed in MPS schools and facilities, and requires working with children; work involves intense concentration on activities taking place around one’s location on a constant basis throughout the entire work day; may be required to physically restrain students if they are at risk of hurting themselves or others.

This position is subject to veteran's preference.
