Bismarck Public Schools is accepting applications for an Instructional Aide at Life Education beginning the 2025-2026 School Year.

Purpose Statement
The role of the Instructional Aide – Life Education Program at Bismarck Public Schools is to provide complex and compassionate support to students with significant learning and developmental challenges. The aide assists in the implementation of instructional and behavioral plans, monitors academic and emotional progress, and supports students in acquiring life and work readiness skills. Responsibilities include delivering personal care, promoting independence, and ensuring a safe and respectful learning environment across various school and community settings.

Supervisory Relationship
Reports to: Principal and/or Program Specialist

Essential Functions
Assist in the care and supervision of students with significant disabilities, ensuring dignity and respect at all times
Monitor and document student performance across academic, vocational, and behavioral domains
Support students in work maturity skill development, including communication, social interaction, and employment-related behaviors
Ensure safety and adherence to district and community-based partner protocols in all instructional and work environments
Provide personal care assistance (e.g., incontinence care, feeding, hygiene) as necessary in a respectful, professional manner
Participate in job site and community-based instruction, supporting generalization of skills and fostering independence
Maintain consistent and professional relationships with students, staff, employers, and agency partners
Attend required training sessions, orientation meetings, and in-service events
Accurately complete all documentation, including timecards, data logs, incident reports, and evaluations
Collaborate with teachers and specialists in developing instructional and care plans
Communicate effectively with team members and supervisors regarding student progress and needs
Adhere to Bismarck Public Schools policies and procedures
This position requires prompt and consistent attendance
Perform other related duties as assigned to ensure efficient school operations

Job Requirements: Minimum Qualifications

Skills

Use appropriate methods for behavioral prompting, redirection, and reinforcement
Maintain accurate records and complete required documentation promptly
Communicate effectively with diverse individuals and teams 

Knowledge
Basic understanding of disability types and their impact on learning and daily functioning
Familiarity with classroom management and behavior support strategies
Awareness of job readiness and vocational support methods
Knowledge of health and safety procedures related to personal care 

Abilities
Remain calm and effective in emergency or challenging situations
Work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team
Manage physical requirements such as lifting, transferring, or providing mobility support
Adapt to changing schedules and student needs 

Responsibility
Work under the supervision of certified and administrative staff. Coordinate and guide students within instructional and community settings. Maintain the confidentiality of student information. Positively impact student learning, independence, and well-being

Work Environment
Frequent physical activities include walking, lifting (up to 50 lbs), climbing stairs, kneeling, and stooping. Exposure to varied noise levels and student behaviors. Requires work in both school and off-site (community) environments. May involve assisting with hygiene and medical needs in accordance with training

Education
High school diploma or equivalent required

Certificates and Licenses
Valid driver’s license required
Criminal justice fingerprint/background clearance
