Job Description:

Position Title: Director of Student Life 

Location: Providing services at the North Dakota School for the Deaf/Resource Center in Devils Lake 

Salary: $5,299-$6182 per month 

Status: Full-time - 11-month August through June, Sunday-Thursday, 1pm-9pm 

Summary of Work

  • Responsible for oversight of the Residential Programming for deaf, hard of hearing, and deafblind students
  • Responsible for developing and implementing after school activities for residential and day students (as allowed)
  • Responsible to oversight, development, and implementation of residential curriculum related to age-appropriate independent living skills (bathing and hygiene, following routines, completing homework, manners and etiquette around supper/dinner, leisure activities, social-emotional learning, bedtime routines, laundry, cooking and cleaning, and other age-appropriate activities)
  • Provide training to Residential Student Life Coaches (SLCs) related to Deaf Education, ASL, Deaf Culture, child development, behavior management and discipline, etc.
  • Supervise Residential Staff ensuring teamwork, fostering clear communication between team members, assigning equitable work assignments, ensuring staff are appropriately meeting each student's unique needs as a whole child, and managing staff schedules to ensure coverage
  • Ability to create an environment of respect and rapport of learning
  • Develop and maintain accurate records of staff files, student activities, and documentation of incidents
  • Communicate with stakeholders (families, students, drivers, lifeguards, teachers and superintendent)


Other:

As the Director of Student Life (Human Svcs V), you will be performing and/or directing duties associated with the Residential Programming for deaf, hard of hearing, and deafblind students at the North Dakota School for the Deaf/Resource Center. You must have gained a higher level of knowledge of the structure and mission of the agency or of Deaf Schools in general. You must also have experiences to perform, more complex case management, program development, crisis intervention, and counseling. This position requires managing the work of others. Work at this level involves a comprehensive understanding of all basic, intermediate, and advanced services and programs being provided with the agency. The work is multi-disciplinary, and assignments address complex issues, problems, and/or systems. To succeed in this position, you will need to be highly organized, able to manage your time and priorities effectively, and be highly skilled in thinking critically. 

Minimum Qualifications 

  • A bachelor's degree with emphasis in Deaf Education, Counseling, Social Work, or related field, or a combination of education, training and experience which demonstrated equivalent knowledge, skills, and abilities. At time of recruitment the hiring agency may specify education, certification and/or additional qualifications depending on the position to filled. Certain job types may have additional bona fide occupational qualifications that are either traditionally or legally required. The minimum qualifications stated for the classification do not replace such bona fide requirements. 
  • Preference to personal and/or professional experience with Residential Programming for deaf, hard of hearing, and/or deafblind students.
  • Preference to individuals who are fluent users of American Sign Language (ASL).
