Elementary School Principal Job Description
Qualifications:
· North Dakota Teacher License and North Dakota Elementary Principal Credential
· MA or PhD
o Per Board discretion, the Board may employ a Principal that does not currently hold an MA or PhD, but still meets the licensure and credentialing requirements of the state of North Dakota, and may require the Principal to obtain an MA or PhD within a timeline established by the Board as a condition of future employment
· Possesses personal skills that are conducive to working cooperatively and productively with students, teachers, parents, and the community.
· Has had prior successful experience in the field of education.
Reports to: Superintendent
Evaluation: By the Superintendent
Supervises:
· Directly: All PreK-6 employees and students at the Lincoln Elementary School
· Indirectly: All employees and students at the Beach School District.
Responsible to the Superintendent and School Board:
· Superintendent
o Keeps the Superintendent completely and continuously informed.
o Communicates with the Superintendent on a regular and timely basis.
o Provides the Superintendent with information upon request.
o Recommends to the Superintendent dismissal of certified personnel who are not performing their job satisfactorily using North Dakota State and Beach School Board Guidelines.
· School Board
o Executes policies of the Board of Education at Beach School District
o Addresses questions of policy
o Implements School Policy
o Attends School Board Meetings
o Provides monthly written board report
Relationship with Parents and the Community:
· Keeps the public informed as to the activities, needs, and successes of the students and the school
· Informs parents when disciplinary action is necessary
· Publishes and informs parents/public of various school activities
· Communicate with parents on matters affecting the education and welfare of their children
Supervision of Licensed and Ancillary Staff:
· Assists the Superintendent in determining staff needs, selecting applicants, and filling staff vacancies
· Determines staff assignments, reviews weekly lesson plans, conducts elementary staff meetings, assists in planning staff in-services, and processes all elementary staff leave/absences per school district policy
· Visits classrooms regularly, completes classroom walk-through forms, and provides a copy of the walk-through form to the teacher and superintendent based on the district goals.
· Supervises instructional staff and provides written formal evaluations in accordance to North Dakota State law and Beach School District Board policy
· Assigns appropriate personnel to accomplish other duties as deemed necessary
· Provides overall instructional leadership and mentorship to teaching and support staff
· Assists with obtaining substitute teachers when necessary
Education Programs:
· Reviews accreditation standards to assure compliance with the State of North Dakota
· Reviews, maintains, and enforces the Elementary Student Handbook and the Classified/Certified Handbooks, and all other handbooks in accordance with School Board policy
· Develops a master schedule, registers and supports students with class scheduling, and prepares report cards
· Monitors student progress and eligibility requirements
· Coordinates other student support programs for the elementary, including, but not limited to, pre-school and Title programs
· Monitors classroom inventories
· Assists with determining the schedule for parent/teacher conferences
· Coordinates grading and reporting procedures
· Coordinates and schedules all standardized assessments
Instructional Leadership:
· Emphasizes maximum instructional contact with students
· Evaluates conditions and makes necessary provisions for a safe school environment
· Maintains confidentiality of student, staff, parent, and phone conversations taking place in the school
· Promotes curriculum development and emphasizes a quality education first and foremost purpose of the school
· Fosters an atmosphere of high academic and behavioral standards
Other:
· Monitors student absences and communicates excessive absences with parents/guardians
· Conducts a K-6 assembly the morning of the first day of school and addresses and reviews school rules and procedures
· Schedules and runs all emergency practice drills
· Reviews transcripts from incoming transfer students and registers transfer students
· Processes forms for outgoing transfer students
· Coordinates independent study and distance education courses when necessary
· Attends IEPs for all PreK-6 students
· Works closely with the Activities Director regarding school activities and transportation needs for field trips, etc.
Supervision:
· Supervision of PreK-12 athletic and activities events
· School Hallway – before school, during change of classes, at dismissal time
· Lunchroom when necessary to assist staff
Discipline:
· Assists teachers/staff with classroom management
· Schedules and supervises after-school detention
· Supervises all in-school suspensions
· Monitors and enforces all discipline policies for grades PreK-6
· Informs parents whenever disciplinary action is necessary
· Consults with the Superintendent when conditions may warrant suspension or expulsion.
Job Description includes all the above duties in addition to all policies approved by the Beach School Board related to the position. Furthermore, duties may be added or changed based on the direction of the Superintendent who directly supervises the Elementary Principal.
