Job Description:

Light of Christ Catholic Schools is accepting applications for a self-motivated individual to fill a full-time (12-month) Lead Custodian position at Cathedral Elementary School. Duties include overseeing the cleaning and maintenance needs within the building and grounds in order to provide a safe, comfortable and clean environment for students, staff and visitors. This position will act as the primary contact with the building administrator and will supervise, schedule, and train custodial staff.

 

Essential Functions and Responsibilities  

  1. Act as the primary contact with building administrator to determine needs within the school building each day/week/month pertaining to event set-up, special activities, weekend needs. 
  2. Basic orientation and training for new custodial staff.
  3. Create schedule for custodians to ensure needs of school will be met.
  4. Oversee quality of work of custodians and work-study students. 
  5. Assume responsibility for the opening and closing of the school building each day and for determining, before leaving, that all doors and windows are secured and all lights are turned off. 
  6. Maintain a litter free environment both inside and outside of the school building:
    • Vacuum, sweep, mop, scrub, polish and wax all school floor coverings.
    • Dust and clean offices and classrooms.  Clean lunch room after serving is finished.
    • Clean and stock restrooms.
    • Dispose of all garbage in the school building.
    • Responsible for building sanitation.
  7. Assure all exit doors are free and clear of obstructions.
  8. Regulate heat, ventilation, and air conditioning systems to provide temperatures appropriate to the season and to insure economical usage of fuel, water, and electricity. If applicable, clean or replace filters in the mechanical room and maintain boiler system.
  9. Make minor building repairs and perform general repairs in plumbing, electrical, carpentry, minor painting, and general mechanical areas. 
  10. Troubleshoot basic mechanical issues and report major repairs needed to supervisor and/or LOC Maintenance Specialist for repairs.  Oversee minor repairs with custodial staff.
  11. Move furniture or equipment within buildings as required for various activities. Assist in remodel and renovation work.
  12. Maintain inventory and request replenishments of custodial supplies and equipment. 
  13. Responsible for the general fire safety of the building, including fire extinguisher maintenance, control of combustible materials, and following fire code procedures and regulations. 
  14. Perform emergency repairs, or cleaning services, as necessary, such as boarding up broken windows or mopping up after a roof leak. 
  15. Shovel, snow blow, and sand sidewalks, driveways, parking areas, and steps as appropriate.
  16. Perform yard keeping duties such as grass cutting and trimming to maintain the school grounds in a safe and attractive condition.
  17. Keep strict confidentiality on private matters pertaining to students and staff. 
  18. Perform other duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum of one year custodial or related experience.
  • Knowledge in basic techniques of electrical repair, maintenance, and carpentry preferred.
  • Technical skills which involve utilization of power equipment.
  • Strong human relations skills. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely.
  • Ability to work in a team.
  • Dependable.
  • Follow required safety procedures.
  • Maintain ethical behavior in all interactions.
  • Mentally alert and able to follow printed and oral instructions.
  • Willing to grow in the job.

 

Working Environment/Physical Demands

The employee regularly works indoors and outdoors. The employee will work near or with moving mechanical equipment. Employee may work with toxic or caustic chemicals. The noise level in the work environment varies from moderate to high. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands and fingers to handle or feel objects, tools, or controls; and talk and hear. The employee frequently is required to reach with hands and arms.  The employee is occasionally required to sit.  The employee frequently must kneel, crouch, stoop, bend, twist, and lift up 50 – 75 pounds.  The employee will sometimes push/pull items.  Specific vision abilities for this position include close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.

 

Schedule

This is a full-time, 12-month position. Hours will generally be from late morning or early afternoon to evening; may include occasional weekend events (sporting games, concerts, etc.).
