Job Description:

Starkweather Public School is accepting applications for a self-motivated individual to fill a full-time (12-month) custodian position.  This position is responsible for providing students and staff with a safe, attractive, comfortable, and clean place in which to work, learn, and develop.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

  • Assume responsibility for the opening and closing of the school building each day and for determining, before leaving, that all doors and windows are secured and all lights are turned off, per schedule.
  • Maintain a litter free environment both inside and outside of the school building:
  • Vacuum, sweep, mop, scrub, polish and wax all school floor coverings.
  • Dust and clean offices and classrooms.  Clean lunchroom after serving is finished.
  • Clean and stock restrooms.
  • Dispose of all garbage in the school building.
  • Responsible for building sanitation.
  • Assure all exit doors are free and clear of obstructions.
  • Make minor building repairs as directed by administration.
  • Report major repairs needed to administration/supervisor.
  • Move furniture or equipment within buildings as required for various activities.  Assist in remodel and renovation work.
  • Perform emergency repairs, or cleaning services, as necessary, such as boarding up broken windows or mopping up after a roof leak.
  • Shovel, snow blow, and sand sidewalks, driveways, parking areas, and steps as appropriate.
  • Perform yard keeping duties such as grass cutting and trimming to maintain the school grounds in a safe and attractive condition.
  • Keep strict confidentiality on private matters pertaining to students and staff.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Teacher Housing Responsibilities
Maintain district-owned teacher housing by cleaning and sanitizing units between occupants, performing routine maintenance and minor repairs, inspecting for safety concerns, preparing units for new tenants, and completing general upkeep of the property, including grounds maintenance and seasonal repairs.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Knowledge in basic techniques of electrical repair, maintenance, and carpentry preferred.
  • Technical skills which involve utilization of power equipment.
  • Strong human relations skills. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely.
  • Ability to work in a team.
  • Dependable.
  • Follow required safety procedures.
  • Maintain ethical behavior in all interactions.
  • Mentally alert and able to follow printed and oral instructions.
  • Willing to grow in the job.

Working Environment/Physical Demands
The employee regularly works indoors and outdoors. The employee will work near or with moving mechanical equipment. Employee may work with toxic or caustic chemicals. The noise level in the work environment varies from moderate to high. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands and fingers to handle or feel objects, tools, or controls; and talk and hear. The employee frequently is required to reach with hands and arms.  The employee is occasionally required to sit.  The employee frequently must kneel, crouch, stoop, bend, twist, and lift up to 50 – 75 pounds.  The employee will sometimes push/pull items.  Specific vision abilities for this position include close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.

Schedule
Hours will generally be early morning to afternoon; may include occasional evening events (sporting games, concerts, etc.)
